Première étude d'envergure sur les monstres et le monstrueux en Russie, cet essai en dévoile les sources historiques, culturelles et littéraires. On y découvre tour à tour les termes qui disent les monstres en russe - ourod en est un - les mythes et légendes qui en content les aventures, l'imaginaire qui en dessine les contours visuels, les événements qui jalonnent leur parcours. Trois moments clés révèlent la puissance symbolique des monstres en Russie : au XVIIIe siècle, la Kunstkamera, considérée comme le premier musée russe, expose des monstres anatomiques - vivants ou en bocaux - côte à côte avec des animaux exotiques et des découvertes scientifiques et techniques.
Au XIXe siècle, des êtres au physique jugé monstrueux sont exhibés dans des foires populaires et autres espaces de divertissement, marquant profondément la culture citadine de l'époque. Enfin, au tournant du XXe siècle, avec le développement fulgurant de la médecine et des sciences de la vie, le regard sur les monstres change encore : le scalpel des chirurgiens fait surgir la possibilité de soigner les anciens monstres et d'en créer de nouveaux.
L'auteure se focalise sur des années charnières de l'histoire culturelle et sociale de la Russie, à savoir le premier tiers du XXe siècle, qui revisite en profondeur ce passé monstrueux. A l'heure de construire une société nouvelle, de faire table rase du passé, quel rôle les monstres ont-ils joué face à "l'homme nouveau" et à la "femme de demain" ? Pour répondre à cette question, l'auteure explore divers textes d'Alexandre Beliaev, Mikhaïl Boulgakov, Marietta Chaginian, Vladimir Maïakovski, Mikhaïl Ossorguine, Andreï Platonov, Andreï Sobol, Alexandre Tchaïanov, Iouri Tynianov ou encore Evgueni Zamiatine.
L'extrême diversité des monstres dont témoigne la littérature de l'époque éclaire d'un jour nouveau la complexité du rapport à l'Autre dans la Russie d'hier comme d'aujourd'hui.
